He was predeceased by : his parents, Claude Akers and Marie Cochran Akers; his son Dennis Lee Akers; and his siblings, Ronald, Billy Akers and Joyce Akers Williams.

He is survived by : his wife Esther Israel Akers; and his children, Karen Martin of Greenwood, SC, Connie Highlander (Sean) of Shady Spring, WV and Zachary Akers (Selena) of Greer, SC. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, May 15th 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Calfee Funeral Home (800 S Oakwood Ave, Beckley, WV 25801). A funeral service was held on Wednesday, May 15th 2024 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
