She was predeceased by: her husband Stewart Penman; her brothers, Charlie Bain and Donald Bain; her parents, John "Jack" and Betsy Bain; and her great grandchild Lily.

She is survived by: her son Bruce Penman (Barbara); her grandsons, Matthew Penman (Jenn), Scott Penman and Daniel Penman (Christy); her daughter Janice Penman; her grandchildren, Devon Stout (Christina) and Lelia York (Jamie); her children, Sandra Penman and Andrew Penman (Lana); her grandchildren, Melissa Penman and Bruce Crews (Shanon); and her great grandchildren, Mason, Taron, William, Thomas, John, Jula, Edith and Riley. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Joan was a blood donation champion and was proud of her award for 491 Red Cross blood donations.
