Laurena Mae (Pollock) Cellars Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Laurena Mae (Pollock) Cellars (Calgary, Alberta), who passed away on December 13, 2023, at the Peter Lougheed Hospital at the age of 86 after a courageous battle against PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy). It was painful to watch the disease slowly take her away from us over the past 3 years, but we are also thankful for those final years. Laurena will be greatly missed by family and friends and especially her husband, Jim.

Laurena is survived by her husband of 62 years Jim; her children: Brian and Blain; her 3 grandchildren: Devon, Jason and Rayhan; and 1 great grandson, Cyan.

Many thanks to the nurses and staff at the George Boyack Care Center for looking after her while she was staying there this past year. Special thanks to the nurses and doctors at the hospital for making her as comfortable as possible in her final days.

A commemoration of Laurena's life will be held in the spring, likely in May for her birthday. We will post the details here and elsewhere once they are confirmed. She was loved by everyone who met her and especially those who had the privilege to get to know her and she will be sorely missed. We encourage everyone to share some of your fondest memories here and we thank you in advance.

“Laurena was a very special lady and will be missed by many. I met Laurena thru the Chestermere Whitecappers and will remember her fondly from our chair yoga classes and her famous knitted slippers that she knit for charity and gave to the quilters to give out with their comfort quilts. She was always smiling and happy and fun to be around. My sincere condolences go out to Jim and family.”

“I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Aunt Laurena. I will always remember her kindness and the memory which I hold most dear to me was the day we buried my mom. I had planned to read a poem at the graveside and I struggled with my grief to get through the words on the page. Suddenly Aunt Laurena's arms were around me and with her support I found the strength to continue and finish reading the poem. What a wonderful lady.
