He was predeceased by : his son Mel Butler Jr.; and his wife Diane Butler. He is survived by : his daughter Val Townsend (Deone); his grandchildren, Dakota, Wacey, Jace and Jessa; his brothers, Walter (Elaine), Don (Elena) and Gordon (Lee Ann); and his uncle Pierce (Arlene). He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Pierce Butler wrote a sympathy message

“We were very sad to learn about Mel's death. Sincere sympathy to the family! So soon after his wife Diane. Mel was very special to me at the Butler ranch in Youngstown , where I spent my youth from 13 to 18 years. Mel and I rode hundreds of miles on the open range, checking fence lines, cows now and again and exploring the prairies. I enjoyed his sense of humor, his happy disposition and appreciation of live. Val and Dione you've lost a special, loving Dad. Mel loved his grandkids. PB”
