Beatrice Wowchuk Obituary
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Beatrice Joan Wowchuk on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at the age of 82.
Born on July 2, 1943, Joan was the eldest of eleven children, a role she carried throughout her life with fierce loyalty, protectiveness, and an unwavering commitment to the people she loved. Being the oldest was more than a place in the family - it was a responsibility she embraced, offering support, guidance, and steadfast devotion to her siblings and their families.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, Fred Wowchuk, in 1998. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her daughters, Sheila (Ray), Shelley (Andy), and Michelle (Brad), and by her grandchildren, Reid, Kate, Emily, and Sarah, who were fortunate to know the strength of her character, the warmth of her love, and the joy of her unmistakable sense of humour.
Although travel often pushed her beyond her comfort zone, Joan approached it with curiosity and determination. Over the years, she ventured to destinations including Bulgaria, England, Turkey, Singapore, and Vietnam, embracing experiences she might once have thought impossible. She faced the challenges later in life with that same resilience, surviving a stroke in 2017 and living with ALS following her diagnosis in 2024. Through it all, she continued to move forward with courage, humour, and grace.
Joan found joy in life's simple pleasures. A devoted Edmonton Oilers fan, she cheered passionately for her team while never hesitating to evaluate the management or offer colourful commentary on players' performance. She also followed politics with great interest, and listened to the music of Adele and Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi's It's My Life was a particular favourite and, in many ways, reflected the way Joan chose to live - with purpose, authenticity, and on her own terms.
Above all else, Joan treasured time spent with her family. She celebrated their successes, stood beside them through hardships, and loved them fiercely and without condition. Her strength, humour, and unwavering devotion to those she loved will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. Joan will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 10 a.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue NW, Edmonton. Reverend Jim Corrigan officiating with interment in St. Michael's Cemetery.
