“Dear Heather, My deepest sympathies on the death of your brother. We had known each since high school and had recently got back into communication. He had acted as my godfather when I converted to Catholicism and so had an important impact on my life. We spoke on the phone just before Christmas when he seemed to be concerned with putting his affairs in order, but his death has come as a great shock.
