He was predeceased by: his parents, Peter Oleniuk and Doris Oleniuk (Malysh); his sister-in-law Helen (Thomas Koep); and also, John and Bernice Rozmy (Bokza).

He is survived by: his wife Joan (Rozmy); his children, Carolynn Shortt (Christopher), Wendy El-Issa (Jalal), Joseph Oleniuk Jr. (Chris Nurse), Barbara Oleniuk and Patricia Quast (Lee); his grandchildren, Jasmine El-Issa, Zachary, Erika Shortt, Jacob Quast and Lexi Oleniuk; his niece Khouloud El Haj Obeid; his brother Paul Oleniuk (Vera); and his nephews, Marcus and Lucas.
