He was predeceased by: his parents, John Schafer and Maria Schafer; his wife Magdalena Schafer; his son Kenneth Schafer; and his sister Betty Koehler.

He is survived by: his children, Warren Schafer (Sheila), Bonnie Moon (Andy) and Robert Schafer (Cheryl); and his grandchildren, Sonya Schafer, Karl Schafer, Chris Moon (Kendra), Lacey Taylor (Robby), Alex Moon (Sarah), Danny Moon (Ally), Kenneth Schafer, Shelbey Schafer (Jean-Francois Dussault), Brandon Mutschler (Whitney) and Brodie Mutschler.
