He was loved and cherished by many people including : his parents, Alex Kohlman and Clementine Kohlman; his wife Janice; his son Jason (Dalyce); his grandchildren, Haylee, Kohen and Caydence; his son Shane (Kimberly); his grandchildren, Keaten, Chance and Kinley; his son Jon (Tara); his grandchild Dao; his son Cody (April); his grandchildren, Daxon, Camden and Cruz; his son Joe (Tiffany); his grandchildren, Tess, Kane and Sage; his stepdaughter Stephanie Frocklage (Derek); his stepgrandchildren, Everleigh, Levi and Brantley; his siblings, Dan (Carol), Keith (Lori) and Vicki Sletten (Wayne); his mother-in-law Eleanora Brost; his former life partner Patricia; his brother Gerhard; his grandson Casey; and his parents-in-law, John, Elizabeth Reschny and Pius Brost.

At the age of 61, Jim was stricken with and struggled with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. In 2016, he moved to St. Joseph's Health Centre.
