He was predeceased by: his mother Mary Polnau of Leslieville; his former wife Mary Polnau; his father Wilhelm "Willie" Polnau; his brother Lawrence Polnau; his brothers-in-law, Bernie Skaalerud and Gordon Fisher; and his great-niece Kyla Megan Graham-Doel.

He is survived by: his wife Verlie Polnau; his sister Sharon Skaalerud; his siblings' children, Darin Doel (Sara), Shane Doel and Ryan Doel (Nonnee); his sisters, Laureen Fisher and Joanne Fisher; and his stepchildren, Debbie Langois, Kim McConnell (Len), Kelly Davis, Jamie Biggs (Tammy) and Nancy Biggs.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made in Don's name to the Red Deer Hospice or the charity of your choosing.
