Marlene Sharon (Wandler) Walroth Obituary
In Loving Memory...
On April 25, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer, Marlene passed away peacefully at the Sturgeon Community Hospital.
Marlene was predeceased by her parents, Leo and Sally. She will continue to be in the hearts of her husband Ray; daughters Kimberly (Dustin) and Kaelie; grandchildren Thorsten, Elias and Eden; her brother Neil, and many cousins, extended family members and friends.
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, on June 11, 1954, Marlene grew up surrounded by a large, vibrant extended family. The many family reunions and backyard barbeques meant close relationships with her aunts, uncles and cousins. Taking after her mom Sally, she was also a die-hard Edmonton Oilers and Eskimos/Elks fan.
After graduating high school, Marlene went on to nursing school at the Royal Alexandria Hospital. Following nursing school, she married the love of her life, Ray, and moved to Grande Prairie, Alberta to start her career and a family.
In 1987, Ray and Marlene completed their dream house and moved their family to an acreage outside of Wembley, Alberta. Marlene worked tirelessly as a nurse at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital for 23 years, including 12 years at the cancer clinic, spent many miles on the highway between Wembley and Grande Prairie taking her daughters to their sporting and music commitments, and spent her weekends, tending to beautiful flower beds and a garden. After living in Big River, Saskatchewan for a few years thereafter, Marlene and Ray returned to Edmonton. Marlene became a grandmother to Kimberly and Dustin’s three children and was always there to lend a hand or shower them in love and treats.
Marlene was a wonderful chef and baker, always testing new, delicious recipes on her family. Christmases were always filled with many sumptuous squares and tarts and any other special occasion often included other wonders and feasts she created. She also loved red wine, music, hosting family and friends for dinner and traveling. Marlene enjoyed many camping trips with her family and friends throughout Canada and the United States. Her favorite place to camp was at Gregg Lake near Hinton, Alberta, where you would find her with a coffee or a cold drink in hand, listening to the loons across the lake. With her husband Ray of nearly 49 years, she travelled to many destinations including Hawaii, Mexico, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Panama, Jamaica and Alaska.
Marlene will be greatly missed, but many happy memories of her will be carried on by her family.
The family is sincerely grateful to the staff of the Cross Cancer Institute and the Sturgeon Community Hospital for their care over the last several years. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Alberta Cancer Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
