Our Mom came to Canada as a young child of 11 years, landing by ship in Quebec and then settling with her parents in Bienfait , Saskatchewan. While she never became famous (to the outside world), she did cut a record at the age of 15 and it and the memory of it being played on the record player are treasured to this very day by us kids. Upon high school graduation, Mom studied to become a Nurse and at age 18, moved to Hazelton, northern British Columbia to start her career. There she met and fell in love with our dad... marrying in February of 1954. They lived for a few years in Smithers as they started having children, and went on to have 7 sons and 3 daughters with a few honorary sons (Patrick Ranahan and Urban Samuelson) They resided in Kitwanga, B.C. for many years while raising their family, and there Mom was a very active member within the community. When she and our Dad left Kitwanga in 1976, they moved to Langley B.C. spending a few years there prior to re-settling in Logan Lake, B.C. with 5 kids still in tow, which is where she and Dad spent their remaining years together. During her time in Logan Lake, Mom opened and operated a flower/gift shop, was head librarian at the local library, did home care, and worked retail in Kamloops.
Eventually, Mom relocated to Abbotsford, B.C. Starting yet another new chapter in her ever evolving and busy life. Volunteering her time, skills and knowledge with her condo's Association as President for a number of years. Spending a few years volunteering at the Abbotsford Airport (picture the friendliest greeter ever) and also at the Abbotsford Hospital before finally retiring to simply "enjoy life" with no commitments except for travel and family. And travel she did... back to her homeland Ukraine, Malaysia, and Mexico where while she never did learn to swim, she was brave enough to snorkel for her first time ever! Top that off with a 7 day canoe trip in central B.C. on Bowren Lake in honour of her 75th birthday. An Alaskan Cruise and numerous cross country treks to Ontario and a few memorable trips to the East Coast also. Her latest trip was to Germany in May of 2019 where she visited areas where she had lived from the age of 6 to 11, after fleeing Ukraine with her family for a safer life in Canada.
Mom had numerous hobbies and talents, Avon Lady, sewing, knitting (she taught all of us kids how to knit when we were little) crafting, reading, watching hockey and football (Saskatchewan Rough Riders), baking (sending homemade goodies to family via Canada Post at Christmas) road trips, and was very tech savvy for a person of her generation! She loved to play cards and online scrabble with friends and family, and it certainly kept her mind sharp!
Our mother lit up every room she ever walked into and how lucky we all were to have been blessed with such a strong, smart, beautiful, independent woman who loved much and lived a full and adventurous life. She leaves a legacy of laughter, love and countless heartwarming memories.
As per her request, cremation has taken place.
A private ceremony will be held in the fall, where her ashes will be buried alongside Dad’s in Logan Lake B.C. at Whispering Pines Cemetery.
Their final resting place... together once again.
We love you Mom and will miss you for always,
Your family xo
