Robert Kazuo Shiho Obituary

In Loving Memory of Robert "Bob" Kazuo Shiho

Robert "Bob" Kazuo Shiho was born in Bridge River, British Columbia, on April 1, 1943, to Takako and Soichi Shiho. He was known to many as the first baby born in the Bridge River Japanese Canadian internment camp during the Second World War. He was the first son in the family and a beloved brother to Melody “Meg” Shudo, the late Joy Shiho, Betsy Shimokura, and Ann Walker. Bob passed away peacefully with his daughters, Sarah Shiho and Jessica Lemire, by his side following a single-vehicle accident. The cause of the accident is still unknown.

A master carpenter by trade, Bob left a lasting mark on countless homes and buildings throughout Vancouver and the surrounding communities. His craftsmanship was exemplary; his custom staircases were once featured in a calendar. He had a lifelong gift for creating with his hands. From painting a mural on his school wall as a teen to rebuilding an old Mercury Capri into a race car as an adult, Bob approached every project with precision, dedication, and ingenuity.

Bob was a creative and sensitive soul. He wrote poetry, valued authenticity, and lived according to what he believed was right. He cared deeply for those he loved, often expressing that love by sharing ideas, knowledge, and perspectives he felt were important. Beneath his quiet, stoic presence was a deeply empathetic and kind-hearted man.

As Bob slowed down in recent years, he spent much of his time at the Starbucks in Como Lake Village Shopping Centre. There, he found a welcoming community among the baristas and the many interesting patrons he came to know. He always spoke highly of the people he met there, whose conversations and companionship became a significant part of his daily life.

At this time, a memorial service has not yet been scheduled. Laura, the mother of Bob's children is currently undergoing her third, intensive round of treatment for lymphoma and requires around-the-clock care, so arrangements may be made when circumstances allow.
In the meantime, the family warmly welcomes your memories, stories, and photographs of Bob. Sharing the moments you cherished with him will help celebrate a life that was uniquely his and deeply valued by those who knew him.
