He was predeceased by: his parents, James Thompson (Stewart) and Margaret Thompson; and his sister Beth. He is survived by: his wife Carole; his children, Christopher and Alison; his stepchildren, Kevin (Alayne) and Keri (John); his grandchildren, Alyse and Grayson; his stepgrandchildren, Jesse, Mackenzie, Johnny and Makenna; his sister Carole (Ken); and his sibling's children, Kent and Kristen. He is also survived by five great nephews.
