Renee Kathleen Taylor wrote a sympathy message

“Hello! Regrets are extended because of the loss of Mr. Steven Maltman. I received a chance to get to know him by having him as a Classmate in French 9 at John Peterson Junior High School in Kamloops, B.C. Since then, I've thought of Steven as a blend of contradictions: A scrappy "dark star" (a bully,) yet receptive when I contacted him at work years later about a personal matter. One of the photos I've submitted here to show Steven's spirit is of a flinty bauble I chanced upon one day. The pretty black bead struck me as local, like Steven, and as a semi-precious rock that was sparkling while ensconced in a rough surrounding. Nevertheless, even though we feel saddened because of Steven's too-soon departure, the loss could be a cool occasion for making a donation, in his memory, to the Grocery Foundation, a charity supported by Save-On-Foods.
