September 12, 1956 – 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Stephen Paul Dodge (Nanoose Bay, British Columbia), born in North Vancouver, British Columbia, who passed away on September 11, 2026, at the age of 69, leaving to mourn family and friends. Leave a sympathy message to the family on the memorial page of Stephen Paul Dodge to pay them a last tribute.Stephen Paul Dodge of Nanoose Bay, BC, passed away at his home in the late summer of 2026, at the age of 69.
Steve was a man of endless curiosity, a self-taught tinkerer, builder, and adventurer who met the world as one long, hands-on experiment. Whatever caught his interest, he taught himself to do, and he did it his own way.
His great passion was amateur radio. He taught himself electronics from the ground up to earn his licence, and as VE7ZNZ he filled his home with radios and built towering, experimental antennas of his own design, always chasing a cleaner signal and a farther contact. Over the airwaves he found a family that reached well beyond his quiet corner of the Island: fellow operators across British Columbia and Washington, and farther still across North America, who knew him by his call sign and his voice long before they ever knew his face.
That same restless curiosity ran through everything he loved: restoring e-bikes, offroading and camping, fishing and boating, and the cabin life he built largely with his own two hands, rigging gravity-fed water, raising a sauna, and losing himself in woodworking and home projects. He earned his hang-gliding certification, and taught himself the harmonica, the flute, and the guitar, picking up new instruments the way other people pick up books.
Steve lived privately, a hermit by his own cheerful admission, but he was never truly alone. He built real and lasting connections in the community of Nanoose Bay, among the neighbours who looked out for him, and in the worldwide radio family who shared his love of the hobby.
He is survived and deeply loved by his son, Jordon, and his grandchildren, Hailey and Nathan, who carry his curiosity and his stories forward.
A small memorial will be held among family and neighbours. Please reach out to the family for details.
73, Steve. VE7ZNZ, now Silent Key.
