He is survived by: his children, Alexandra, Calvin, Kristjan and Emma; his granddaughter Kaia; his wife Patty; his children, Ali (Calvin), Kaia and Reid (Emma); and his siblings, Paul Birston (Margaret), Carla Tough (Brian), Harold Birston (Carla) and Drew Birston (Amanda). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may optionally be made to the BC Cancer Foundation or the David Suzuki Foundation, two organizations close to his heart.
