“I miss Bernadette already even though we really only got to know each other well far too late... She seemed to be more of a second sister to me rather than my cousin. We talked about a lot of things and I found that in a lot of ways she was much more similar (personality-wise) to me in a lot of ways than I am with my real sister. And she LOVED animals the way I do (I really wish I could have taken her Kahlua and spared her that worry as time ran out- my apologies to her for that). I'm just glad I was able to tell her that she was a second sister to me and how much I liked and loved her. I know I felt unfortunate not to be able to visit her while she was well or be physically present to help her through her final sickness. But she was a tough grrl (like all the women in this family seem to be) and she hated to feel weak or even ask for help if she needed it. It wasn't pride that kept her from asking but a sense of independence that she could handle anything life threw at her no matter what. I wish she'd been able to visit with her mum and Mark when they were here. Just like thinking of Bernadette as a second sister I still kind of think of Mark as the little brother I'd always wanted but never had. I'm here for you if you need me and I hope you'll always remember that Mark. We might be far apart in physical distance but we're still family; I love you Mark, I loved your sister and I'll miss her very much.”
