He was predeceased by: his wife Verleen. He is survived by: his children, Dawn, Rick, Robb and Virginia; and his siblings, Maureen Birklein and Terry (Elizabeth).

Don developed Alzheimer's and in 2014 he moved to Victoria to be closer to his brother and family on the west coast.
