Miklos Kovats Obituary
Miklos "Miki" Kovats, peacefully passed away at the age of 90 on October 17, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife, Judith Kovats, and his children, Clara, Nora (husband Gareth), Andrew (wife Angie), step-daughter Judy (husband Mark), and grandchildren, Zoe, Hailey Alex, William, and Julia.
Born in Tata, Hungary, on December 5, 1932, Miki was the youngest of two children to Emilia Csukly and Miklos Kovats. His early years were immersed in the culture and beauty of his homeland. In 1956, during the Hungarian Revolution, Miki, along with fellow Sopron University students, embarked on a challenging journey to Canada to seek refuge from tumultuous times. Among his fellow students was his future wife, Marta. Upon their arrival in St. John, New Brunswick, Miki proposed to Marta, becoming the first Hungarian couple in their group to wed in their new home. Miki eventually earned a Master’s degree in Forestry from the University of British Columbia, and his career led him to the Ministry of Forests, where he served until his retirement in 1993.
He and Marta built a life in Victoria, BC, where their daughters, Clara and Nora, were born in 1962 and 1965. Tragedy struck in 1967 when a car accident took Marta's life. Despite life's challenges, Miki displayed remarkable resilience. He remarried, and in 1975, with his ex-wife Maria, welcomed his son, Andrew, into the world. In 1982, he remarried once again to Judith, sharing 41 wonderful years together.
Miki's passions included fishing, boating, waterskiing, biking, swimming, camping, hunting, and gardening. He actively participated in the Hungarian Club, connecting with his heritage and volunteering his time. Beyond his adventures and sportsmanship, Miki was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many. His affection for dogs was evident throughout his life, particularly with his cherished companion, Sam.
In later years, Miki dedicated himself to preserving memories through letters and memoirs, safeguarding cherished moments and stories. In the face of declining health, he found solace in the company of his children, sharing stories and laughter, demonstrating his enduring spirit. Miki's passing reminds us of the profound impact he had on those fortunate to know him. He will be dearly missed.
