With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Marie Gale (Burton) Kowalchuk (Portage la Prairie, Manitoba), who passed away on May 9, 2026 at the age of 84. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
She was predeceased by: her former husband Robert "Bob" Hykawy; her parents, Ernest "Ernie" Burton and Margaret "Maggie" Burton; her siblings, Howard Burton (Ruby), George Burton (Opal), Everett Burton (Eliza), Cecil Burton, Ernest Burton (Joan), Melville Burton (Freda), Phyllis Davis (Melville), Margaret Anderson (Elwin), Evelyn Allum (George), Stella Fisher (Sidney) and Donna Jones (Gerald); and her grandparents, Ernie and Maggie.
She is survived by: her husband Matthew "Fritz" Kowalchuk; her children, Laura McDonald, Shari McCulloch (Phillip), Robert Hykawy (Christine), Sean Kowalchuk (Tamara) and Patrick Kowalchuk (Tammy); and her grandchildren, Ryan, Tyler McDonald, Tia McCulloch (Wesley Van Tigham), Tahlia Borgal (Matthew), Kayleigh, Robert Jr., Zachary Hykawy, Zoey, Noah and Elizabeth Kowalchuk. She is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandsons.
Viewing will be held on Friday, May 15th 2026 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel (56 Royal Rd S, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N1T6). A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 16th 2026 at 3:00 PM at the MacGregor Cemetery.
