Bernie Nemetchek Obituary

Bernie went to be with his Lord and Saviour on December 13, 2023, at the age of 86. Bernard (Bernie) Paul Nemetchek was born on the farm near Minitonas, MB in 1937 to the late Paul and Sylvia Nemetchek.

Bernie spent the first 18 years of his life on the family farm in the Ravensworth District near Minitonas, MB, and was baptized in 1951 when he made a profession of his faith in Jesus Christ. In 1955, Bernie moved to Swan River where he worked in the plywood factory until 1956 when he moved to Sudbury, Ontario and worked in the Falconbridge Nickel Mine. He lived with his brother Tom (Lorraine) and later moved into the bunkhouse at the mine. He met Carolyn in October of 1958 at the Gospel Hall Church in Onaping, Ontario; Bernie and Carolyn were married on June 6, 1959. In August of 1959 they moved to his sister Mary and her husband Paul's empty house in the Ravensworth District, where that winter he "worked in the bush" and earned logs for their future house as partial payment for his labor. In 1960 they purchased land 3 miles south of Swan River by the Roaring River and moved into the taxidermy shop that Bernie had previously built at the age of 15. During this time, he worked for a crew that built the Beaver Lumber building in Swan River. In July of 1960 they moved into their log home. In 1961 and 1962 Bernie earned $1/hr building houses for Lawrence Watson, where Bernie learned carpentry. In 1962 Bernie built a Taxidermy shop, Northern Taxidermy, on the banks of the Swan River in the North end of the town of Swan River. In 1963, Bernie started working for Steve Maksymchuck building houses and doing Taxidermy in the evenings. In 1964 they built a house beside the Taxidermy shop and moved into it. By 1966, Bernie had started to do taxidermy full time. Bernie, Carolyn, and their children moved to the farm in the Duck Mountain's Shell Valley near Boggy Creek in 1974. There, Bernie would drywall in the winters and farm in the summer, until 1984 when he built Boggy Creek Taxidermy on the farm so he would not have to travel in the winter to work. Bernie continued taxidermy until 1996 when his son Mel took over the business, which he continued to help with until 2018. Bernie ran the farm until 2007 when his son Max took over, with Bernie continuing to help as much as he could until he was no longer able.

Bernie enjoyed God's creation of the outdoors and hunted from a young age, going on many hunting trips across Western Canada and the United States. He also enjoyed collecting antiques, especially antique guns.

Bernie is survived by his wife Carolyn; his children Mel (Shanna), Sindi, Max (Trina) and Myles (Lorna); his grandchildren Raven, Willow (Andrew), Alana, Brooklyn (Evan), Dakotah, Carson (Kendall), Carlton, Elijah and James; his great granddaughter Kiah; his siblings Anne, Milly (Jim), Eileen (Kent), Ruth, Betty (Paul), Darlene, Evelyn (Wes), Garry, and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents Paul and Sylvia and siblings Shirley, Mary, Doreen, Vera, Jerry, and Tom, and by grandchildren Jasmine and Dustin.

Bernie will be remembered for his tireless efforts to provide for his family through his final years and will be greatly missed by his loved ones, including his wife Carolyn of nearly 65 years.

A Funeral Service will be held for Bernie on Monday, December 18, 2023, at 2:00 pm from the Roblin Evangelical Mission Church in Roblin with Pastor Randy Moffit officiating. The service will be livestreamed and available through the link below at service time.

Interment will follow in the Roblin District Cemetery.

Should friends so desire, donations in memory of Bernie may be made to Roblin District Community Foundation Inc. - Hospital Fund, Box 1599, Roblin, MB.
