Bill Cairns wrote a sympathy message

“I met John in Yorkton in 1969 or 1970. John was our first concrete example of the integration of Canada's Armed Forces. And what an example! In his army battledress and looking seven feet tall, he was a very intimidating presence, physically and knowledge-wise for us Air Force radar technicians. We reconnected in Winnipeg years later but lost contact again when I retired in 1993. I was honoured to be his friend. Our sincere condolences to Murielle and the family. Bill Cairns”
