He was predeceased by: his daughter Chantel Petawanaqueb; his parents, Andrena Berens (Angelina) and Jones Everett; his siblings, Rene Berens, Claudette Berens and Emily; his grandmothers, Rosa Everett (Baby) and Rose Everett; his siblings' children, Ernest Berens Jr., Elijah Sayer, Wayland Lavesseur, Keesley Everett and Eliza Berens; his brothers-in-law, George Favel and Lloyd Genaille; and his friend William Levasseur (Bill).

He is survived by: his children, Vincent Petawanaqueb, Michael Berens Jr. and Richelle Petawanaqueb (Joey); his significant other Darlene Petawanaqueb; his siblings, Ernest Berens, Wayne Berens (Brenda), Walter (Elaine), Edwin Everett (Leona), Darlene Whiteway, Marlene Genaille, Tammy Berens, Darlene McKay (Jimmy) and Carla Merasty (George); and his grandchildren, Siarra, Hailey, Nathan, Bella, Emma, Vincent, Mathias, Darius, Michael, Chance, Joey Jr., Freedom, Chantel, Penelope, Drayden, Ethan, Eric, Daven, Faith, Florence, Hope and Elijah. He is also survived by his family, including his children, grandchildren, and son-in-law.

A wake was held on Sunday, March 1st 2026 at 1:00 PM at the Washagamis Bay Band Office. Visitation was held on Monday, March 2nd 2026 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Cropo Funeral Chapel in Winnipeg, Manitoba (1442 Main St, Winnipeg, MB R2W3V7). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 3rd 2026 at 10:00 AM at the same location. A burial was held on Tuesday, March 3rd 2026 at the Brookside Cemetery (3001 Notre Dame Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3H1B8).
