He was predeceased by : his parents, William Townsend and Shirley Townsend (Staples). He is survived by : his wife JoAnne Townsend (MacNaughton); his son Jack Townsend (Drew Fournier) of Dartmouth, NS; his siblings, Alyson Townsend (Steve Ward) of Rothesay, NB and David Townsend (Marlyn) of Calgary, AB; his niece Alanna Ward (Kevin Dunphy); his great-niece Lydia Dunphy of Kingston, ON; his nephew Sam Ward of Halifax, NS; and his friends, Trisha Perry and Matthew Tweedie.

In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory can be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
