He was predeceased by: his parents, Mel Johnston and Irene Johnston (MacTavish); his siblings, Lou Stewart and Laurie Johnston; and his niece Claudia Stewart.

He is survived by: his significant other Marilyn Burke; his sons, Lunn Johnston of Moncton and Robert Johnston (Robin) of Edmonton, AB; his grandchildren, Shaundra Crawford and Zack Johnston; his great grandchildren, Jackson, Eden, Carmen and Madelyn; his nephew Colin Stewart; and his niece Lauralie Johnston.
