Leo Bernard Gillis Obituary
Leo B. Gillis, 78, of Moncton, passed away at the Moncton City Hospital surrounded by family on Friday, January 23, 2026. Born in Sydney, Cape Breton, he was the son of Alexander and Mary Gillis.
Leo enjoyed spending time with his family, going on family vacations, attending his grandson's baseball and hockey games and walking his dogs and granddogs. Leo was an avid reader and movie enthusiast who always enjoyed a good story, woodworking, bird watching, Sunday drives throughout the Maritimes, having a competitive game of crib with his friend, Paul, and finishing his day with a good cup of tea and a date square. Leo was also a proud graduate of St. Francis Xavier University (B.Sc. '72) and the University of Ottawa (M.Ed. '78).
Leo is survived by his wife and best friend of 56 years, Anne-Marie, his cherished daughters Lisa (George) and Lana (Kevin) and grandson, Sam. He will be missed by many family members as well as special friends Vilma, Noel and Paul, and his many granddogs.
In addition to his parents, Leo was predeceased by his brothers Jimmy and Eddie, and sisters Agnes, Linda and Ester.
The Family wish to express their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the doctors at the Moncton City Hospital: Dr. Daigle, Dr. McNally, Dr. Igoe and all the nurses on the Palliative Care Unit and Family Medicine Unit.
Cremation, which has been entrusted to the professional care of Fergusons Funeral Home & Fergusons Crematorium, has already taken place. In keeping with Leo's wishes, there will be no service. A celebration of Leo's life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Moncton City Hospital, PAWS (SPCA) or a charity of your choice.
