He was predeceased by : his father John "Jack" McDowell; and his brother Rodney McDowell. He is survived by : his mother Barbara A. McDowell (Borthwick); his sons, Josh Johnston (Crystal), Nathan McDowell (Jessica) and Zack Bradley; and his siblings, Barry McDowell (Debbie Bagley), Patricia Kimball (Brian) and Jacqueline Pendleton (Laurie). He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In Walter's memory, donations to a charity of the donor's choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
