He was predeceased by: his parents, John "Jack" Smith and Margaret Smith (McKenna); his father-in-law Dave McGill; his brothers, Robert Smith (Maisie), Bill Smith (Annette) and Jim Smith (Judy); and his niece Lynn Smith.

He is survived by: his spouse Jan McGill of Quispamsis; his daughter Michelle (Greg Sophocleous) of Sydney, N. S.; his grandsons, Brandon Swan of Sydney, NS and Randy Swan of Halifax, NS; his great grandchildren, Greyson Kennedy-Swan and Briley Shaw; his mother-in-law Lynn McGill; his sister Marie LeDrew (Calvin); his brothers-in-law, Dave McGill and Rob McGill (Karen); and his pet Sophie. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
