He was predeceased by: his parents, John Smith and Agnes Smith (Kerr); his brothers, James (Ernestine) and William; and his son-in-law Dan Murray.

He is survived by: his wife Anita; his daughters, Suzanne and Laurie (John); his granddaughters, Carolyn (Brett), Sarah (Andrew) and Julia (Michael); his great grandchildren, Josie, Tate and Nash; and his brother Junior (Helene). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
