He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Lester Thornton and Jean Elery Densmore. He is survived by: his wife Brenda Joyce Downey; his children, Angela DeVico (Anthony) and Leonard Scott Thornton (Peggy); his granddaughters, Julia Dewire (Nathan), Ashley Potter (James) and Katie Koss (Robert); and his aunt Frances Dowling.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Fisher House Foundation or Goodwin Hospice at Goodwin Living Foundation.
