He was predeceased by: his parents, Roland Matthews and Gertrude Matthews; his mother-in-law Lyma Dibbon; his siblings, Leslie Matthews (Bonnie), Garold Matthews and Ethel Rabenort (Paul); his brothers-in-law, Mac and Don; and his pet Maggie.
He is survived by: his wife Melita Matthews; his children, Chad Matthews of St. John's, NL, Tracy Matthews (Cory Sturge) of Witless Bay, NL and Renee Picco (Justin) of Fox Cove, NL; his grandchildren, Matthew Weir, Nicholas Picco and Rebecca Picco; his siblings, Betty Halliday, Lorna Matthews (Jim) and Ronald Matthews (Lise); his siblings-in-law, Dave (Thelma), Lem (Jean), Mercedes, Hazel (Mike) and Mary; and his close friend Jimmy Hartson.
Visitation was held on Monday, September 7th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM and from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Wiseman's Funeral Home (193 Main St, Burin, NL AOE 1E0 AOE1E0). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 8th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location. The inurnment was held on Tuesday, September 8th 2026 at 12:00 PM at the Zion United Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Eugene's memory may be made to Zion United Church Cemetery Fund.
