He was predeceased by: his parents, Lawrence Whelan and Bridget McDonald; his stepfather Thomas McDonald; his parents-in-law, Thomas and Frances Pritchard; his daughters, Rosemary Duffenais and Michele Milmore; his siblings, Patrick (Mary), William (Geraldine), Samuel, Thomas (Alice), Anna Murray (Roy) and Stella Gushue (Charles); and his siblings-in-law, Thomas Pritchard, Hubert Furey and Shirley Sharpe.

He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth; his son Steven; his grandson Shane Whelan (Sarah); his sons-in-law, Shawn Duffenais and Kevin Milmore; his grandsons, Andre, Ian Duffenais, Gerard Milmore and Dawson Whelan; his great grandchildren, Zachery Wells and Rihanna Reid; his siblings, Eleanor Furey (late Hubert), Lawrence Whelan (Bernice) and Ambrose Whelan (Mary); and his sisters-in-law, Mary Whelan, Alice Pritchard and Marlies Pritchard. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and many special friends.
