He was predeceased by : his parents, Frederick Appleby and Elizabeth Appleby; his wife Maria; and his siblings, Frederick, Bill, Tom, Mary, Thelma and Della.

He is survived by : his children, Richard (Karen), Deborah Moore (Geoff) and Christopher (Sherry); his grandchildren, Matthew (Heather), Michael (Krista), Hilary (Matt), Kelsey and Joshua (Savannah); his great grandchildren, Quinton, William, Susannah, Diana and Karyn Bennett (Rob); his sisters-in-law, Frances Hollander, Elizabeth Sheppard and Shirley Pack; and also Rowena Williams. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.

As Joe was an avid gardener, flowers are gratefully accepted or donations in his memory may be made to The Bowring Park Foundation, St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church, or a charity of one's choice.
