He was predeceased by: his siblings, Michael and Lucille; and his parents, Johannes Pieter and May Mary Jordaan of South Africa. He is survived by: his girlfriend Christina Parker; his children, Adrian (Jeanne Brown), James (Cece) and Sarah; his grandchildren, Yohann and Archie; his former wife Chantal Jordaan (Kamester); his siblings, Leonard Jordaan (Brian) and Helen Steyn; and his stepgrandchildren, Iris and Hank.
From the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, he received the Horst Leipholz Medal in 1999 for contributions to mechanics, the P.L. Pratley Award in 2001 for best paper on bridge engineering, and the Casimir Gzowski Medal in 2018. In 2015, the ASME International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering held a special symposium in his honour, recognizing his extraordinary contributions to ice engineering.
