She was predeceased by: her parents, James D. Merritt and E. Georgina Merritt (Killen); and her brother-in-law George Hopkins. She is survived by: her husband Arnold "Ted" Canning; her children, Steven Canning (Brandi) of Amherst and Angela Dowe-Ingersoll (Peter Ingersoll) of Grand Manan, NB; her granddaughters, Megan Dowe, Marika and Mackenzie Canning; her siblings, Beverly Hopkins and James Merritt (Laverne) of Springhill, NS; and her niece Dale Millard MacArthur. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
