He was predeceased by: his father Arthur Coates; and his brothers, Carson and Donald. He is survived by: his mother Jessie Coates (Taylor); his wife Deborah (Miller); his children, Jeff (Heather), Walter "Wade" (Grace) and Jolene; his grandson Daniel (Jennifer); his siblings, Sterling (Marcia) and Dorothy Coates; his siblings-in-law, Cecil MacLelland (Rose), Ross MacLelland (Betty) and Honey MacLelland; Terry Lee MacLelland. He is also survived by nieces, nephews.
