He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald Steeves and Margaret "Peggy" Steeves (MacDonald); and his siblings, John Steeves and Jeannie Steeves. He is survived by: his significant other Marilyn Whidden; his children, LeeAnn Steeves, Garrett Steeves (Melissa McGregor), Leta Whidden and Leanne Grant; his siblings, Donna (Angus Coutts), Claude, Rebecca, Lila (John Connor), Linda, Carolena (Andre Noel), Gordon, Mark, Martha (Gerry Gurney), Donald and Kim (Tim Walker); and his grandchildren, Connor Smith, Gage, Keilan Martin, Maredith, Casey Grant-Spin, Haley, Jacob MacGillivray and Logan Bakker. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and, friends.

Donations in Gary's memory can be made to the Antigonish Town & County Palliative Care Society.
