He was predeceased by: his parents, Andrew and Ann; and his brother William. He is survived by: his wife Sandra; his children, Audra (Ross Fredericks) and Andrew (Lisa Welsh); his grandchildren, Alex (Jessica Fitzherbert), Abby, Luke and Olivia; his sisters, Steffie Hawrylak-Young and Kasu Claxton (John Pountney); and his sister-in-law Bernette Burnley. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 6th 2026 at 12:00 PM at the Saint John Xxiii Catholic Church (35 Colby Dr, Dartmouth, NS B2V 1N7). A reception was held on Tuesday, January 6th 2026 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the same location.

As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers donations in John's memory may be made to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission or Saint John XXIII Church.
