He was predeceased by: his parents, Oliver Yates and Ethel Yates (Cole); his wife Maud; his brothers, Arthur (Gerald) and Allister Yates; and his sisters-in-law, Elizabeth and Mildred Yates.

He is survived by: his children, Barbara Bywater (Derek), Carolyn Yates, Robert Yates (Anita) and Darrell Yates; his grandchildren, Cory, Andrew, Cameron, Nina, Samantha, Lindsey and Melanie; and his siblings, Austin Yates (Pansy) of Botwood, Beaton Yates (Phyllis) of Botwood, Roy Yates (Diane) of Botwood, Hayward of Fraser Lake, B. C., Lloyd Yates (Paulette) of Fraser Lake, B. C., Col. Ruby Anthony (Stan), Wynn Yates-Browning, Jean Hendry (Vince) and Spring Hill. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren, and; many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army, Halifax Citadel Community Church, or the Masonic Foundation of Nova Scotia.
