John Matheson Jollimore Obituary
JOLLIMORE, John Matheson, age 93, of Jollimore, Halifax, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully at Melville Gardens on Sunday, July 28, 2024.
“Jack” as he was affectionately known, recently celebrated his 93rd birthday on July 2nd surrounded by family. Jack was predeceased in 2012 by his loving wife Ella Marie (nee Landry), Amirault’s Hill, Yarmouth County, N.S. He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Mackinnon (Mike), of Herring Cove NS and son Timothy Jollimore (Charis) of Surrey, British Columbia; grandchildren, Alexander MacKinnon (Jayne); Luke MacKinnon; nephew David Meade (Cheryl). Jack was preceded in death by his two sisters Shirley Fraser (Stuart) and Leah Meade.
He was born in Halifax in 1931 to Alexander John Jollimore and Mary Wilhelmina Jollimore (Hartling) of Beaver Harbour. He was a descendant of the original settlers of Jollimore in the early 19th century. Jack spent his working years at a few places; Westinghouse; Halifax Airport and many years at the Government Halifax Dockyard, helping to outfit ships for the Gulf War. He enjoyed his time with his co-workers laughing and playing jokes.
Jack’s real passion was sailing on the Halifax Arm with his wife and best friend, Ella. He started out racing sailboats as a young man, which became a focus for most of his life. He belonged to the Armdale Yacht Club for many years where his boat Tequila was moored, and his name was on many trophies in the display case. Mom and Dad spent many marvellous social occasions at the Club with friends. Jack was an animal lover who spent years walking around Jollimore with dog treats in his pockets for all his friends. You could always hear Jack telling stories, and making people laugh, he was always up for a good time with his friends and family. He enjoyed his life with his wife Ella and raising his kids.
He was a proud father, spending a lot of time with his children going on trips; making great memories with family; camping, fishing, canoeing, sailing. He was a “Jack” of all trades, he could build it, fix it or make it. Special thanks to lifelong friends Bob & Rita Harrop and Val & Maurice Comeau. A big thank you to the nurses at Melville Gardens who enjoyed his humour and lack of filter, always a comedy show with Jack.
We believe that Dad is sailing into the sunset to meet his trusted First Mate, Mom. Always be kind to each other.
A service will be held at Atlantic Funeral Home, Halifax Chapel, 6652 Bayers Road, Thursday August 8th at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dad’s name may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or ElderDog Canada.
