Bruce Vincent Baker Obituary

Bruce VIncent Baker- 76 of Oakland, Lunenburg County, passed away from a brief illness with cancer on February 7, 2020 at Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital. Born April 14, 1943 in Halifax he was the son of the late Spencer Garfield Baker and Verna Leotis (Haughn) Baker.

Bruce is survived by his son, Bruce Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, Martins Point; as well as his daughter, Denise and her partner, Timmy Tanner, Back Centre; grandchildren, Rachel and Nathan Baker; Kelsi-Rose and Ivy-Marie Tanner. Bruce was predeceased by his wife Gladys, his brother Raymond Baker, both his parents and his wife’s parents Karl and Jean Oxner with whom he was very close to.

He was a member of the Mahone Bay Legion and had many friends through the legion.

He was a longtime member of the South Shore Bluegrass Music Association.

Bruce started his careers doing auto body work but worked in the insurance industry most of his life working for Canavans Insurance Appraisals. He worked for Stelia as a delivery driver for a few years following his retirement. He was a avid musician played the bass guitar in many bands, most recently the Centurians. Over the years he was a band member with Private Collections, Music City, the Eastern Four, the DeHavillands, and would often play with various local artists. He also played in the St. John’s Lutheran Church Band in Mahone Bay.

He had a kind, charming, friendly and fun nature with a helping hand for everyone. He often would be just one of the boys hanging out at camp with his son, grandson and friends, four wheeling and snowmobiling with his son in law, or chatting in a garage. Always young at heart he often joked that his body wouldn’t allow him to keep up with his mind. His daughter was his little girl even in her adulthood. He loved his family, adored his grand children and had many friends. He was full of creativity and could fix or tackle any challenge big or small. He enjoyed working on cars (especially corvettes), tinkering in the garage, the outdoors, camping, his bass guitar, music, and happy hour. He was a big man with a warm heart.

The family would like to thank his care support team for their compassion and support during this difficult time: Dr. Weeks at QEII, Dr. Robertson and team at SSRH, Dr. Gowan and the palliative care team, and Dr. Mcauley and the wonderful FMH 2nd floor medical nurses. Thank you also to friends who have reached out with love and kindness to support us. It is heartwarming to know that our Dad was loved and liked by so many.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Mahone Funeral Home, 32 Parish St., Mahone Bay (902) 624-8241. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: http://www.mahonefuneral.ca
