He was predeceased by : his parents, Arnold Tanner and Frances Tanner (Hamilton); and his sister Mina. He is survived by : his wife Claire; his children, Faye, Kevin (Anna), Leroy (Wanda), Robert and Don (Karen); his grandchildren, Paul, Matthew, Brittney, Eben, Josh, Shay, James, Makayla and Erik; and his siblings, Bob, Eben (Erma) and Carolyn (Joy). He is also survived by 11 great grandchildren.

Donations in memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation.
