She was predeceased by : her parent Basil Leonard; and her brothers, Ronald and Donald. She is survived by : her parent Grace Elma Carter (Mills); her husband Finlay Robert MacDonald; her sons, Todd (Natasha), James (Sherry) and Sunnybrae; her grandchildren, Anna and Jarred; her siblings, Jeannie Weatherbie (Andrew) of Truro, Percy, Hal (Kari), Ottawa, Mike (Rosemary), West Chester, Gordie (Corrine) and Salmon River; and her brother-in-law Greg.

Donations may be made in memory of Julie to the Pictou County Victorian Order of Nurses or Aberdeen Health Foundation Palliative Care Unit Endowment.
