He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Archibald MacLean and Ivy Linda Sheffield MacLean; his siblings, George (Diane), Charles "Kip" (Barbara) and Nancy (late Gordon MacGregor); and his sister-in-law Suzanne Strang.

He is survived by: his wife Vivienne Baxter; his children, Christy (Lawrence Chu), Mairi (Bobby O'Handley), Katie Jane (Sharaz Shaikh), Jon-Duart (Tanya Hammell) and Lachlan "Lauchie" (Heather Byrne); and his grandchildren, Lachlan, Callan, Catriona Chu, Brody, Rowan O'Handley, Kyla, Jacqueline, Talyn MacLean, Vivianne, Berkley MacLean, Braeden, Logan and Bronwyn Shaikh.
