He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Smith and Bertha Smith (Chisholm); his brother David Smith; and his brother-in-law Brian MacTavish. He is survived by: his wife Barbara Smith; his children, Janice Smith of Sydney, NS, Hilary Fitzgerald (Roddie) of Boularderie, NS and Ernie Smith (Shannon) of Edmonton, AB; his stepchildren, Robin Melanson (Christian), Regan Melanson (Marcilyn) and Renee Melanson (David); his stepgrandchildren, Liam and Sara; his sisters, Judy MacLeod (Wayne) and Joy MacTavish; his sister-in-law Bernice Smith; and his pet Duff. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 9th 2026 at 2:00 PM at the Sydney Memorial Chapel (49 Welton St, Sydney, NS B1P5R3).
