He is survived by: his wife Sheryl Schelter; his daughter Melissa Schelter; his sisters, Julie Schelter and Bonnie Schelter-Brown (Richard Brown); his stepchildren, Chelsea DaSilva (Lisa) and Justin Barkway; and his grandchildren, Dayshawn DaSilva and Ariel Barkway. He is also survived by many extended family members, lifelong friends.

In keeping with John's generous spirit, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre in his memory, helping protect the creatures he cared so deeply about.
