He was predeceased by : his parents, Alfons Erich Willi Schmidt and Flora Martha Sprotte; his wife Helga Waltraud (Furch); his siblings, Edith and Erich; and his niece Sandy Trunzer (Tai).

He is survived by : his child Volker Erich; his sisters-in-law, Ruth Furch and Karin Trunzer; and his nephew Oliver Trunzer (Kelcina George). He is also survived by his grandchildren, great grandchildren, gran nieces, nephew and friends.
