He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert McIlwrath and Catherine McIlwrath; and his brother-in-law Daniel Burgoyne. He is survived by: his wife Frances; his children, Robert (Daphnee), Christine, Richard (Carla) and Kimberley; his grandchildren, Maverick, Calvin (Mackenzie), Abigail and Donald; his great grandchildren, Deacon and Nora; his brother Gibson (Linda); and his siblings-in-law, Douglas McArthur, Shirley Burgoyne and Christine McArthur. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces.
