He was predeceased by: his wife Megan Victoria Western; his mother Eva Madeline Western (Smith); and his siblings, Norma Brockman (Jack), Jean Rolson, Connie Galt (Bud), Elsie Jarvis (Walt), Marie Tarrant (Frank) and Alex (Marion).

He is survived by: his children, Elizabeth Gilbert (Archie Gilbert) and John Western (Helena Vanderlinde); his grandchildren, Steph Gilbert, Philip Western, Mary Gilbert (Camden Eason), Thomas Ware (Jasmine Nantais) and Braeden McCallum; and his close friend Catherine Glendinning.
